The Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches holds annual regional focus retreats where pastors and elders can get together and encourage each other and build relationship. The Northwest Focus Retreat is just the Northwest District, so most everybody knows each other… except us.

This was the first retreat where we as Community of Hope’s leadership board attended. Not the whole board mind you – I think it mostly had to do with availability. Myself, Gord, Ken, Jason and Philip left immediately after church to drive down to the Clear Lake Bible Camp near White Pass, WA.

Jason was going down to finish up his Licensure review. You may ask, “What is licensure?” It is the process of a church organization authorizing you to marry and stuff. It is also the first step towards ordination, or the recognition and commissioning you as a shepherd of a church. Jason had already been licensed in the church he was at before but he was asked to be licensed by the Grace Brethren. It is a two stage process – first they give you a long written test that basically covers a ton of theology. Then they have an oral review where a board of other pastors asks you questions based on what they consider your weakest written areas.

Part of the reason Ken and Gord and I went was because we are going to be seeking licensure soon and it would give us an opportunity to see what the oral reviews were like. The other part was it was a great opportunity to get to know the other guys in the district.

So we drove down Sunday afternoon. Monday all day was a teaching session led by John McIntosh, the lead pastor of Simi Valley Grace Brethren church – a pretty big and pretty successful church. He is also this year’s moderator of the FGBC. He was a fantastic, gentle, challenging speaker. I was very blessed by our study of 2nd Timothy.

Other blessings: spending a little time talking with Greg Howell, pastor of Goldendale Grace Brethren. What an encouraging man. Greg Stamm, talking a little about his son and hearing his enthusiastic support for our work in Canada. Scott Avey, and his heart for the Brethren and seeking where God would have him next. Hiller Payne, my new friend from Mukilteo, who I will not allow to forget his offer of gumbo!

Can’t wait for the next retreat with these gentlemen!

Wow, it has been far too long since I updated this blog! I am embarrassed, because it is meant to be an almost daily journal of our journey to the unthinkable: to plant a church for Jesus in Medicine Hat. It is hard for people to read along when we aren’t writing!

So here is an update: I plead excuses because (if you have been keeping up on Twitter or Facebook) you know that last weekend I had a bit of a double-whammy: I graduated from ACTS Seminaries with a Master of Arts in Christian Studies, and the following Sunday I preached my third sermon ever at Community of Hope.

The graduation ceremony went very smoothly. Having 6 Seminaries working together is great while you are going there because the interplay between denominations and the collegial environment despite distinctive approaches to theology, life and practice makes for a very rich experience. However, graduation ceremonies are a bit of a bear because legally, conferment of your degree only happens when the representative of said body says the “magic words” so we had to listen to the legalese from each Seminary AND from Trinity Western Univeristy who simultaneously grants the degrees to all graduands.

I was surprisingly calm all things considered. If this had been the only thing I had to worry about that weekend, then I might have been more nervous. But as it was with Sunday looming in my mind this seemed to be a cakewalk.

Thursday night my parents rolled into town (one day early), and we had dinner at the restaurant attached to their hotel. I had Friday off, and Grandma and Grandpa Edwards pulled up around noon, so we had them over that afternoon, and had a big Chinese Food feast that night with them and my aunt and uncle: my Dad’s twin brother at our place. That was a good party.

Saturday I had to head to the venue for the graduation by 10am, and we were out there until 3pm. It was good to be finally finished, and I did get to touch base with the two professors that I wanted to speak to the most: Bruce Guenther, the History professor who I was Teacher Assistant for on my first go-round, and also Kent Anderson, professor of Homiletics, who was my faculty advisor at Northwest Baptist College in 1997, and advised me because I had taken a lot of college (at different colleges) that I would actually be eligible for Seminary. If it hadn’t been for him, I wouldn’t have graduated today. Of course, he did not recall that at all.. but then again at that time I was just another college student 23 year old, and strangely, I have never gotten around to taking any of his classes.

Saturday night we had a bigger family dinner at the restaurant again, with all the kids there and with my Uncle Paul, Aunt Sonya and two of their three teenage girls, as well as Dad’s bother and his wife, and Grandma and Grandpa. It was a lot of fun, and I received some gifts for graduating which were a surprise , and very welcome.

Sunday I was to preach. Pastor Philip had taken half the church to Goldendale, WA for the Northwest District Grace Brethren Conference, but the other half – some 50 people, were still coming. I spoke about the “Calling of God” (go ahead and listen here), and actually came in fairly short – only 25 minutes was my message. I feel like I started off a little scattered but settled down ad feel like I did pretty well – especially since this was my first time preaching in front of family – my parents and my grandparents stayed to watch me.

So obviously, such a weekend took some time to come down from. That’s my excuse for not writing anything in this space for a couple of weeks. What are we up to now? Well, I am going to start picking away at either a rewrite of the “Attitude of Hope” membership class, or an entirely new version that will become the beginnings of a vision and mission framework for our church in Alberta. I am going to be teaching our Discovery class for 7 weeks starting in May, to introduce some people to the truth about Jesus in preparation for membership. We also have our “Great Canadian Adventure” coming up in mid-June, and Philip says he wants me to take a hand in organizing that, then begin to prepare and plan for the 2010 version which will take place in Medicine Hat. We don’t have anythign big planned for this summer because the Twins could be arriving anywhere between the beginning of July and mid-August. The Dr. told Cheryl he would be making sure that things wrap up by the 38th week, with the earliest we could deliver (unless something is amiss) being the 32nd week. That pretty much devours the summer.

Stay tuned!

Last night was our leadership Christmas dinner. A lovely time was had by all, by appearances. It looks like we may have a new couple joining us – more hands make lighter work!

So, going into the holidays, I can feel momentum beginning to build with my wife and I, and also with my pastor, Philip, about what needs to be done to move our dream of planting in Alberta forward. I thought you might be curious, so I’ll let you into the next few months.

First on the plate, I will be seeking licensure with the Grace Brethren. This means I will be able to marry people! Ooooo… However, being quite rigorous, theologically, I have some study to do to pass it. I have a major written test to write, then based on that, they do an oral review as well. I hope to complete that before spring.

After that, my wife and I are beginning to plan a trip to tour about 5 or 6 different communities in Alberta with regards to seeking God’s will in which community to target. At this time the list includes Cochrane, Okotoks, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat (Redcliff), Spruce Grove/Stony Plain and perhaps St. Albert. We want to do this in the May/June time frame.

This fall we hope to form a small group made up entirely of prospective team members who will accompany us to Alberta. We are praying that some people are stirred by God to join us.

This fall there is a church planting conference in Calgary – details on speakers and such have yet to be finalizedd but we are already in agreement that we should go. That will be a great learning experience.

So, that is a big picture snapshot of what 2009 will look like for us. We still need to colour it in, but Lord willing, our future will take a much clearer shape as we go next year.

First, let me just say that I have NEVER seen a rainstorm like the one that greeted us on the drive from the Orlando Airport to Innisbrook on the day of our arrival. I’ve never actually seen the heavens fall like that before. It was coming down so hard and fast that at points the traffic stopped. The rain was hitting the windshield so fast that you couldn’t see the car 10 feet in front of you.

Innisbrook Golf Resort and Conference Center was a lovely place to visit. They were excellent hosts, and their facilities were quite nice. The grounds, with the golf courses were pretty, but not a lot of room for walking. If they’d had more sidewalks we might not have driven our car around as much. They did have shuttles, but it was hit-and-miss getting one during busy times. A little frustrating that their only clear “family” restaurant on resort was closed for renovations.

We weren’t really sure what to expect when we went down there. In retrospect, it is clear that what this was meant to be about was fellowship. It was about reconnecting with all those people from other areas of the country, celebrating what is going on in the many organizations that the Grace Brethren cooperate with, and being encouraged with messages to keep on doing what Jesus wants us to be about. Jim Brown was the lead person and spoke briefly at the beginning of each major session. He is a really neat individual. We got to see all sides of him that week: from his self-concious, but nonetheless brave foray onto the streets of Tampa to find out what people believe about life and the afterlife, to his huge heart to reach lost people and encourage others to do the same, to the crescendo of his message, pointing out humanity’s needs in all corners of the world at the top of his lungs and at the edge of heartbreak. You can definitely see why his ministry in Goshen, IN has been blessed.

He wasn’t the only character there either. It was a pleasure meeting many of the faces of the Grace Brethren, and I was honoured to have some great conversations and learn more from many of them. Sometimes they weren’t necessarily speaking to me, but their words showed me a passion for people and for Jesus. I think of Tim Boal‘s moving talk about Go2 Church Planting, the new arm to encourage and equip new leaders to plant new churches. I think of Jim Laird and his wife, who blessed us with interest in what we are doing in Canada, and with prayer for us at our table. I think of Terry White, who invited me to sit next to him at the BMH breakfast and helped me get the inside track on publishing and how they work. I think of Mark Cahill and his two challenges to take seriously the Christian job of sharing the gospel as much as you possibly can, planting seeds, watering, weeding and so on to help create the harvest. I think of my own pastor, Philip Bryant, who stirred the pot of the fellowship everywhere he went. I think of Tom Avey, who despite having a billion things to think about and do as far as organizing, still had time for us and remembered who we were, despite having only ever exchanged one or two emails. I think of Glen Sykes, a man who likes his sushi, but was gentleman enough to help my feisty boys while we were out at the Kobe Steak and Sushi. His story was one that moved me in the few minutes we had for intelligent conversation around my sons’ silliness.

There is something rich in being a member of a fellowship (not a denomination) where the people are intent on Christ and intent on not telling you what to do but walking beside you, and encouraging you, and being encouraged by that fellowship. I really felt that while we were at iGo. We are both really excited and plan already to go to next year’s event, Equip ’09 which will be in Columbus, OH. I understand it is much more focused on training, seminars and teaching which is fine by us. The speaker list already looks very exciting. But more, the opportunity to be with these men and women again is anticipated most of all.
